One of those things I was told growing up was 'Don't talk badly about friends to other friends. It will make them wonder what negative things you are saying behind their backs.' To a degree I suppose it's true. But you could always be complaining about the same friend, or a same behaviour that bugs you. It's one of those sayings to make a kid stop gossiping or bitching, it's not always true.
I think the opposite is more true. If you treat every single person you meet like they are your bestest most fantastic friend in the world, it will make others question their relationship with you. If you hug and squeal and act like you've not seen that person in 5 years, everyone who thinks they are your friend will wonder if they are simply an aquaintance that you give the same treatment too. In my eyes, that sucks even more.
If someone is talking/bitching/complaining about you when you're not around, t means you ar ee interesting enough to be a topic. But if you are treated with equal thundering joyfulness as a just-met aquaintance, it degrades your feeling of relational uniqueness.
